Dr Robert Cheng is a procedural gastroenterologist and hepatologist. He works as a staff specialist at Westmead Hospital. Dr Cheng studied medicine at the University of New South Wales; he subsequently trained as a physician and gastroenterologist in Sydney at leading tertiary institutions including Royal Prince Alfred, Royal North Shore and Concord Hospitals, as well as at major regional centres including Wollongong and Gosford Hospitals.

After becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Dr Cheng undertook a liver transplantation fellowship at the Australian National Liver Transplant Unit. He was subsequently awarded a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) scholarship to pursue a postgraduate Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) research degree.

Dr Cheng is currently completing his doctoral thesis (PhD) on exosomal and genomic biomarkers for hepatocellular carcinoma at university of Sydney and Centenary Institute at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He has publications in various Gastroenterology and Hepatology journals. Dr Cheng practises evidence-based medicine and provides a wholistic, compassionate patient-centred care with the latest available treatments.
